Unweaving Machine (Prototype)

Porto, PT/ Guimaraes, PT  2022

Wood, industrially woven fabric, video, participation of visitors

Machine: 160cm x 120cm x 50cm Fabric: 140cm x 700cm

The work is part of of an installation consisting of multiple works. The cycle is called Unweaving The Machine and was produced during an art residency at Contextile Biennial 2022.
Together with Sudarium/Tenugui/Sweatcloth and Blueprints For Luddites, the work relates to issues of contemporary industrial production, connects post-colonial contexts and refers to the Luddite movement and a history of rebellion against machines. Weaving is often seen as a metaphor for time or society as a whole. The Unweaving Machine unweaves an industrially made fabric instead of creating one and thus reverses the one-sided, normative logic of production and quite literally rewinds history. A contextual video connects the various works and themes of the large scale installation.

Produced and exhibited at Contextile 2022 Contemporary Textile Art Biennial. Guimarães, PT. Curated by  Cláudia Melo.
